In Memory of
Carolyn E. Johnson
(1947 - 2024)

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Carolyn E. Johnson, a beloved educator, trailblazing advocate for diversity, and cherished family member, on Sunday, November 17, 2024. Born in Indianapolis, Indiana, Carolyn was a proud Hoosier who dedicated her life to learning, service, and uplifting others.
A graduate of Indiana University, Carolyn was selected as an Insight Fellow and earned her undergraduate and master’s degrees in education. In the fall of 1966, she joined Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. – Tau Chapter, later in life Carolyn joined Chi Phi Omega Chapter where she served as Membership Chairman, Chaplain, Historian and Advisor to Chapter Presidents while embracing its principles of sisterhood and service to all mankind throughout her 58 years of membership.

Trailblazing Advocate

Carolyn earned her Ph.D. at Purdue University, where she transformed the African American Studies and Research Center, creating groundbreaking courses like Black Women Rising and initiatives such as the DiversiKey program. Her passion for diversity and inclusion extended far beyond academia. As Purdue’s Interim Chief Diversity Officer, Carolyn championed programs that fostered understanding and collaboration. Despite her accomplishments, Carolyn treasured family gatherings, her love for cooking, and the joy of simple moments. She believed in the beauty of humanity’s differences, saying, “Every person brings something unique to the world, and together, we make it a better place.”
